The Murdoch Hill Vineyard stands 512m high in the cool climate Adelaide Hills near the township of Oakbank.
  • Vine Positioning: A predominately north facing slope, maximizes sunlight and facilitates ripening.
  • Soil Structure: Sandy loam over medium clay subsoils.
  • Canopy Management: Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP), canopy trimming and spur pruning.
Vintage:
Climactically, 2004 was an excellent vintage. The ideal ripening season was marked by warm sunny days and cool evenings, uninterrupted by rain, allowing for the Cabernet Sauvignon to develop and retain excellent fruit characteristics.
Winemaking:
Whole bunches were harvested, crushed and fermented on skins in stainless steel fermenters with regular pumping over to fully extract colour, flavour and tannins. The wines were then pressed and matured in a combination of new and older French oak barrels for 18 months before bottling.
Winemaking:
Closure: Stelvin pH: 3.60 TA g/L: 6.44 G&F: 0.08 VA: 0.50
Style & Tasting Notes:
Hailing from the warmer site of the Murdoch Hill vineyard, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon shows elegant varietal fruit characteristics of blackberry, cherries and violet fruits with distinctive mint characters of the Adelaide Hills. The generous fruit depth is supported with a well-integrated oak influence of vanilla, spice and a toasty background, developed by 18 months in the finest French oak. This has resulted in a well-balanced and structured wine with considerable length of flavour supported with firm, persistent tannins. This wine is bottled under screwcap to maintain consistency in each bottle.

The Advertiser, Tony Love, August 2007
92 Points. A Hills Cabernet with sunshine and ripeness from the kind of warm site needed for this variety. Brian Light has gathered blackberries and nuances of violets with lovely undercurrents of oak and a cleverly subdued tannin presence. A good year.
